Visual field testing is most commonly used to detect signs of glaucoma-related optic nerve damage. Visual field tests can also detect central or peripheral retinal diseases, eyelid conditions such as drooping (ptosis), optic nerve damage and disease, and conditions affecting the visual pathways from the optic nerve to the area of the brain (occipital cortex) where this information is processed into vision. A visual field test measures a person's entire field of vision, including central and peripheral (side) vision. By mapping the visual fields of each eye individually, visual field testing can detect blind spots (scotomas) as well as more subtle areas of dim vision. Because the visual field test is a subjective examination, the patient must understand the testing instructions, cooperate fully, and complete the entire visual field test for the results to be useful.
